Biography
Garnik Goukasian has been an Artist Violin Teacher at Holy Names Music Center since 1991. He was born in Yerevan, Armenia, where he began studying violin at the age of 7.
Garnik received his Masters of Violin Performance from the internationally renowned St. Petersburg Conservatory, Russia. During his years there, Garnik performed as a soloist with the St. Petersburg Student Orchestra and Yerevan Chamber Orchestra, gave solo recitals, and played in a duo with pianist Natalia Trull - winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition. As a member of the Student Orchestra, Garnik played under
the direction of Valery Gergiev. In 1976, he took part in the presentation concert of the distinguished contemporary composer Alfred Schnittke.
After graduation, Garnik moved to Bulgaria. There he joined the first violin section of the Bulgarian Radio Orchestra and Festival Orchestra and served as a Professor of Violin at the Sofia Music School. Garnik’s students succeeded in winning international competitions and continued their studies in reputable schools, such as the Vienna Music Academy. As an orchestra member, Garnik performed with the outstanding conductors Mauricio Arena, Alexander Lazarev, and Valery Gergiev. He also participated in audio and video productions for Sony with the music director Emil Tchakarov and singers Mirella Freni, Ghena Dimitrova, Agnes Baltza, Elena Obraztsova, Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Nicolai Ghiaurov, and many others. At the same time, Garnik continued to perform as a chamber musician and toured Spain, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Greece, Poland, and Japan with various chamber music groups.
From 1990 - 2010, Garnik played in the first violin section with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra and Bach Festival Orchestra. In 1996 he gave a recital at Alberta College, Edmonton, and in 2002 and 2004 he had recitals at Holy Names Music Center. In addition to his violin teaching, in 1992 Garnik founded the Holy Names Ensemble, thus initiating chamber music classes at Holy Names Music Center.
Now he co-directs the Honors Chamber Music Program with Linda Siverts.
